Project: Income, nutrition and livelihood through fish at the Horn of Africa

FairFishing is an independent, non-profitable International Non-Governmental Organization (INGO). Since 2011 FF have been working closely together with fishermen, fishery companies, local and national organizations, ministries and authorities at the Horn of Africa in order to upgrade and sustain a fishery industry, fulfilling the needs for gainful employment, nutrition and optimal, rightful utilization of marine resources, as well as to provide an alternative to illegal activities at sea.

FairFishing started its operations in Berbera, Somaliland, but has now expanded to several locations at the Horn of Africa. FairFishing wishes to create jobs, economic development and contribute to regional stability through the establishment of a sustainable fishery industry and value chain.

KSC have been active in FairFishing since 2011, first as a board member then as project and technical manager until December 2017.  KSC has also been active in the public debate in Denmark on piracy and fishing on the Horn of Africa:

689 Dhows: It is both fiberglass and wood and they are between 15-22 meters and all with inboard engines and all rigged for fishing with drift nets, langliner, handliner and scrapers. The longest is 22 meters long and the least 15 meters. They are owned by Oman, but the crew (6-10 men) is often from the East.

19.245 fiberglass motorboats: They are built in one and the same shape. The longest are 10 meters down to 7 meters and the 2.10 meters wide and all have the least 60 hp outboard engines, but many, maybe half, have two large outboard motors. They hive on the beach and it goes very fast with game or four reel pulls and where there is a certain stretch of coast there are both, there can be hundreds in one place. One example is the coast from Baka to Seeb to the west of Mascat, there are several thousand such boats over a 10 km stretch. And here, small houses have been built where the fish have their thing and when they land, buyers are in contact with buyers from the companies who then buy via the phone and send cars to pick up the catch.

45,553 registered fishermen: I did not get it clarified, but I think that figure only covers Omanians in the fishing industry. I do not think that the fishermen (crews from abroad) on the big dhows are included in this statistic.

Catch and sales figures in 2012: The land was 188,117 tonnes (156,000 tonnes of 2012) worth 139 million Rial (2 billion DDK) of which 50,000 tuna, kingfish etc. were small pelagic sardines, mackerel 70,000 tons and demersal as snapper, grouper etc. 45,000 rests squid, lobster, shrimp and shellfish. Export approx. 115,000 tons and imports approx. 17,000 tons.
Seasons: Like Somaliland where June, July and August are on half of the best months December to March.

Situations from the feasibility study to the  fishery-project. 2012-2016.

Aim: The project was scaled to support fisher in their attempt to move the fishery outside the reef. Inshore fishing, within the reef, had become too big and now also not sustainable. Therefore, the larger vessels had to be adapted to more sea-going fishing outside the reefs.

The project supported by DANIDA, CISU and the EU should build and support coastal fisheries in Eritrea, including being active in the promotion of fish throughout the country. Eritrea has the sovereignty of a large area of the Red Sea, an area with many fish and more than 400 islands and therefore a sea area perfect for smaller and more coastal fishing. The project was carried out in close cooperation with fisheries cooperatives and government.

The association was established in 1995 with me as working chairman and project manager for several projects in the period 1995-2008. In 2001, LLH bought a fishing boat that was converted to serve as sailed headquarters for the national association.
